In practice, some certifications are more recognized than others. <\/p><p>The differentiators are usually:<\/p><ul><li><strong>exam difficulty<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>alignment with industry standards and trends<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>method of knowledge assessment.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>The Agile world is similar. Below, I will describe three Scrum Master certifications that I have personally obtained. These certifications cover the same topic &#8211; Scrum and Agile philosophy. The certification is narrowly focused on understanding the Scrum Framework, of which scrum.org is the de-facto custodian. Taking this certification doesn&#8217;t require knowledge of tools like Net Present Value, Earned Value Management, Conflict Resolution, etc. Reading the PSM II booklet is recommended, as it&#8217;s useful to get familiar with the terminology that will be used in the exam before taking any certification.<\/p><p>The PSM I certification and its associated PSM I book are at such a basic level that they don&#8217;t provide enough foundation for independent work as a future Scrum Master. Therefore, to avoid unnecessary costs, I suggest jumping directly to PSM II certification and its associated literature. PSM I certification would potentially be useful for managers in the process of deciding whether to implement Scrum in their organization.  <\/p><p>PSM II certification provides future Scrum Masters with a solid theoretical foundation and confidence to support the decision to implement Scrum framework in their organization. But it doesn&#8217;t require knowledge of approaches and tools that would enable practical work in the newly created Agile environment. In my <a href=\"https:\/\/deltaagile.com\/en\/produkt\/scrum-master-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scrum Master<\/a> course, I extensively cover this aspect of Agile implementation as well. <\/p><p>If you want to test your knowledge and get a feel for the topics covered by the certification, I invite you to try the sample exam questions at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scrum.org\/open-assessments\/scrum-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scrum Open<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/scrum.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scrum.org<\/a> owns the protected title &#8220;<strong>Professional Scrum<\/strong>&#8220;. Primary literature for it is the PMI-ACP Exam Prep book. Since the book is relatively old (2015), information needs to be supplemented from other sources. An example of outdated information is the claim that the Product Owner should not participate in Sprint Retrospective because it&#8217;s only for the Development Team (another term that was discontinued in Scrum Guide 2020).   <\/p><p>Despite minor inaccuracies that have materialized since the last edition, this book provides a solid core understanding of Agile philosophy. When I later researched and tested various advanced Agile approaches and methods, I often encountered conflicting information. Through further study of various sources, I was able to eliminate misleading and inaccurate information. In each of many similar cases, it turned out that the most appropriate and best-supported approach was already described or indicated in the mentioned book.   <\/p><p>The exam itself requires knowledge of various Agile frameworks at the level of their own basic certifications (Scrum, Kanban, XP,..), financial metrics, KPIs, and other Agile tools that transform the theoretical framework into a practical methodology. When preparing for this certification, it&#8217;s helpful to solve as many practice questions and exams as possible. I studied for one year for this exam.  <\/p><p>PMI-ACP is the gold standard in Agile certification, but due to its difficulty, cost, and need for renewal, it&#8217;s often omitted from various lists of \u201c\u2665most popular\u2665\u201d Agile certifications.<\/p><p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/deltaagile.com\/en\/produkt\/scrum-master-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scrum Master<\/a> course, the content required for PSM I and PSM II certifications is combined with many tools and approaches tested in the PMI-ACP certification. Actually, I signed up for it by accident. International Scrum Institute was advertising a Scrum study script that promised many practical examples and solutions. After registration and payment (then still 47 USD), it seemed I could only access the study material after solving some demo questions. When I realized I was actually taking an exam, I was already halfway through.    <\/p><p>This anecdote also reflects the difficulty level of this certification. If you&#8217;re only interested in the formal title of Scrum Master, this certification is for you. Personally, I don&#8217;t recommend it.<br>In my opinion, International Scrum Institute has positioned itself at the top of providers due to its low certification prices.  <\/p><p>As a result of the low price, there is an extremely large number of nominal \u201cScrum Masters\u201d with this certification. The interest of such a large group is certainly to increase the reputation of their own certificate. Consequently, most Google searches on Scrum certifications also show this certification with numerous positive and enthusiastic comments. Unfortunately, in this case, this is not a guarantee of the certificate&#8217;s professional legitimacy.
