Coordinating Multiple Development Teams and Scaling Agile Organisations

Many organisations successfully implement Scrum or Kanban at the individual development team level. New challenges emerge when multiple teams begin working on the same product.

This raises questions such as:

• How to coordinate the work of ten, twenty, or fifty development teams?
• How to maintain the benefits of Agile approaches with a large number of developers?
• How to prevent organisational growth from causing a return to slow, hierarchical, and process-heavy ways of working?
• How to select the most suitable Scaled Agile approach for your organisation?

The Scaled Agile course is designed for Scrum Masters, Agile Coaches, development managers, transformation leaders, and managers facing the challenges of coordinating multiple development teams.

The course’s distinctive feature is that it does not promote a single Scaled Agile framework, but rather comparatively examines four of the most influential approaches and their organisational assumptions.

After completing the course, you will:

• understand the organisational challenges of multi-team development,
• know the benefits, limitations, and assumptions of individual Scaled Agile frameworks,
• understand the structure and operation of the Nexus, Scrum@Scale, LeSS, and SAFe frameworks,
• be able to assess the suitability of each approach for your organisation,
• understand the impact of organisational structure on Agile transformation success,
• know practices for coordinating multiple development teams,
• understand approaches to managing inter-team dependencies,
• be able to recognise the most common anti-patterns when scaling Agile approaches,
• gain a foundation for planning and executing large-scale Agile transformations.

Special focus of the course

Most Scaled Agile training focuses on a single framework.

This course comparatively examines:

• Nexus,
• Scrum@Scale,
• Large Scale Scrum (LeSS),
• Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).

The goal is not to train participants to blindly implement a particular framework, but to develop an understanding of the organisational problems that each approach attempts to solve.

Special emphasis is placed on the connection between Agile philosophy and organisational structure, as most difficulties in scaling Agile approaches arise precisely at the intersection between development teams, management, and existing organisational processes.

Case Study

The course includes an extensive case study of a company developing a complex technology product with a combination of software and hardware development. The practical example demonstrates typical problems of multi-team coordination, organisational growth, geographical distribution, and crisis management.

Certification Preparation

Although not its primary purpose, the course provides a solid foundation for Scaled Professional Scrum (SPS) certification.

Additional Support

Upon course completion, each participant receives one hour of individual consulting to discuss their organisation’s specific challenges, help assess the current state, and prepare initial implementation steps.
